چکیده

Although the pressure chamber has gained wide acceptance as a convenient method for the measurement of plant water status, the relationship between the pressure observed in the chamber and other parameters of plant water status remains unclear. If one assumes that the spatial arrangement of water in the shoot is the same under pressure as it was in the intact plant, the positive pressure (P) and xylem solute potential (41'.) are acting in the chamber to restore the excised shoot to its original volume. In the case of leaf samples, Boyer (4) proposed that P and 4,t are related to the original leaf water potential ({L) by equation 1:

Leaf water potentials measured with a pressure chamber.

Leaf water potentials were estimated from the sum of the balancing pressure measured with a pressure chamber and the osmotic potential of the xylem sap in leafy shoots or leaves. When leaf water potentials in yew, rhododendron, and sunflower were compared with those measured with a thermocouple psychrometer known to indicate accurate values of leaf water potential, determinations were within +/...

In situ field measurement of leaf water potential using thermocouple psychrometers.

Thermocouple psychrometers are the only instruments which can measure the in situ water potential of intact leaves, and which can possibly be used to monitor leaf water potential. Unfortunately, their usefulness is limited by a number of difficulties, among them fluctuating temperatures and temperature gradients within the psychrometer, sealing of the psychrometer chamber to the leaf, shading o...

Errors in measuring water potentials of small samples resulting from water adsorption by thermocouple psychrometer chambers.

The adsorption of water by thermocouple psychrometer assemblies is known to cause errors in the determination of water potential. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of sample size and psychrometer chamber volume on measured water potentials of leaf discs, leaf segments, and sodium chloride solutions. Reasonable agreement was found between soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) leaf water...

Comparison of the dye method with the thermocouple psychrometer for measuring leaf water potentials.

The dye method for measuring water potential was examined and compared with the thermocouple psychrometer method in order to evaluate its usefulness for measuring leaf water potentials of forest trees and common laboratory plants. Psychrometer measurements are assumed to represent the true leaf water potentials. Because of the contamination of test solutions by cell sap and leaf surface residue...

The water relations of two tropical rainforest species (Virola surinamensis and Eperua falcata): Is Virola unusual as previously reported?

The objective of this study was to examine the water relations and hydraulic architecture and vulnerability to cavitation in Virola surinamensis and V. michelii and to compare to similar measurements in Eperua falcata. In several previous reports Virola was seen to have a rather narrow range of xylem pressure potentials (Ψx) near zero in the course of a wet-season day while having water fluxes ...
